Galesburg High School had the top team and individual in the Carl Sandburg College High School Welding Competition on Friday at the College’s Main Campus in Galesburg.

Galesburg’s team of Charles Drauden, Austin McDorman, Ethan Wood and Jacob Young took first place with 387 points, ahead of runner-up Cuba (349) and third-place finisher ROWVA (348).

Young was also the individual winner, scoring 104 points. Alex Houston of Knoxville was second (99) and Wood of Galesburg was third (96). Galesburg also had the top score on the written test portion of the competition, with McDorman scoring 84 points.

This year’s event featured 30 students and six teams from seven area high schools: Cuba, Galesburg, Knoxville, ROWVA, United, West Prairie and Williamsfield

Teams of four were tested on blueprint reading, shielded metal arc welding and oxy-fuel cutting in the shop in addition to taking a 50-question test. Competitors received a drawing, coupons, welding supplies and access to welding/cutting equipment in each practical skill area and had 30 minutes to complete each station. Work at each station was judged on dimensional accuracy, conformity to the drawing requirement and visual examination of the welds and torch work.
